The BUTCHER OF TEHRAN, Butchered or dead?
Raisi’s death unlikely to change Iran foreign policy
Tumblr media
PARIS: The death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash could lead to a period of    political instability but is unlikely to change Iran´s foreign policy or its role in the Middle East, analysts said on Monday.
The hardline cleric was considered a favourite to succeed supreme leader Ali Khamenei, 85, who has ultimate authority in Iran, and Raisi´s death will pose a challenge to the country´s authorities in ensuring the stability of the political system.
But analysts are betting on the continuity of the Islamic republic´s foreign policy which is the domain of Ayatollah Khamenei and the secretive Supreme National Security Council. “A successor may emerge who is as conservative and loyal to the system as Raisi was,” said Ali Vaez, an Iran specialist at the International Crisis Group.
“On foreign policy, the supreme leader and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps will continue to dominate strategic decisions”, he said on social media site X, anticipating “more continuity than change”. Farid Vahid, an Iran expert at the Fondation Jean-Jaures, said that “Raisi was absolutely in lockstep with the Guard Corps”, which “has left a lot of room and freedom for the Guards in the region”.
With Raisi, “decision-making was very fluid because he was completely subservient to the leader”, Vahid told AFP. “The question for the Iranian conservatives is to find someone who will be elected... and who will not cause them too many problems.” Raisi´s death comes at a time tensions are soaring between the Islamic republic and Israel following the start of the war in Gaza after Hamas´s attacks on Israel on October 7.
Those tensions peaked in mid-April, when Iran carried out an unprecedented attack against Israel, unleashing 350 drones and missiles, most of which were intercepted with the help of the United States and other allied countries.
Tehran also supports the so-called Axis of Resistance against Israel -- a network of armed groups including Lebanon´s Hezbollah, the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, and the Huthi rebels in Yemen.
“It will be (the) status quo,” Jason Brodsky, an expert at the Middle East Institute, said of Iran´s relations with these groups. “The IRGC reports to the supreme leader and liaises with Hezbollah, the Huthis, Hamas and the militias across the region. The modus operandi and the grand strategy of the Islamic republic will remain the same,” he told the BBC.
“The strategic decision maker in the system is the supreme leader, the president is an implementer.” Iran denies it wants to acquire nuclear weapons, but it is no longer complying with its commitments under the 2015 deal with world powers which limited its nuclear ambitions in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions. The pact, known by the acronym JCPOA, fell apart after the unilateral withdrawal of the United States under then-president Donald Trump in 2018 which led to the reimposition of crushing sanctions on Iran.
“The Iranian foreign ministry already has a new head and the same priority: negotiations on the nuclear program”, Hasni Abidi, director of the Study and Research Centre for the Arab and Mediterranean World in Geneva, said on X.
Brodsky said that “Iran´s nuclear program and the decision-making surrounding it will remain unchanged because at the end of the day it´s the supreme leader and the Supreme National Security Council which are overseeing the nuclear file”. The ultraconservative Raisi, 63, had been in office since 2021, during a time that has seen Iran rocked by mass protests and an economic crisis deepened by sweeping US sanctions.

Aliyev calls snap presidential election
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Thursday called early presidential elections for 7 February.
Aliyev, 61, was last re-elected in 2018 for a seven-year term. He won a reported 86 per cent of the vote in a poll boycotted by the main opposition parties.
In September, after a nine-month blockade, he ordered a lightning offensive to wrest full control of Nagorno-Karabakh from the ethnic Armenians who had ruled it for more than three decades.
It was Baku’s second successful offensive into ethnic Armenian-controlled territory in three years. Almost all of the region’s 120,000 or so ethnic Armenians fled as a result of the military conflict.
Thanks to his country’s oil wealth, Aliyev has forged a strong alliance with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, while managing to maintain a working relationship with both Russia and the West.

Speaking of boycotting Eurovision, after my latest reblog (linked), I need to express my thoughts, since this morning I've read the worst takes ever.
Some people saying "I just won't watch the Israeli entry" or "Actually boycotting doesn't work, just let us have this fun thing when the world is so awful right now" or "Boycotting from your sofa is just performative activism".
My gosh. Get educated.
The Palestinian Call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel asked for a boycott of the whole contest. A quote from the linked article says:
Participating in Eurovision for Israel is “a dream, in particular this year, when it has even more meaning.” Since October 2023, Israel has murdered more than 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza, including at least 12,300 children, and injured a further 70,000. Understanding the contest’s propaganda value, particularly in the time of genocide, the Israeli president Isaac Herzog says, “it’s important for Israel to appear in Eurovision.”
So, "just watching anything but the Israeli entry" does not count as boycotting.
"The world is awful right now" because awful people try to make propaganda out of "this fun thing", participating in a grandiose festival while people are still being killed and attacked every day.
This is exactly the right moment to think about Palestinian people! (Or the Armenian people who were killed and displaced by Azerbaijan during the recent Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.)
I am tired too, but I live in a privileged nation, where nobody is trying to actively harm me. I have a choice to watch the fun and the glitter and listen to silly songs or I can try to think of someone else who is getting attacked on the daily.
Mind you, you can still find a way to boycott the contest and listen to the songs, if you can't LIVE without them. Just don't add views or interactions to official channels who make money out of it, and don't use the hashtags. Talk to your buddies in DM and don't make it trend! How is that complicated??
And if this is still too much of a "performative activism", here's something else less passive that you can do, without even standing up from your sofa:
This google doc has a list of Palestinian people who need donations right now:
Donate hygiene kits:
Donate eSims:
Daily clicks:
And now you can block me if my post on your Eurovision tag is clouding your fun.
Please do not be antisemitic or islamophobic in the notes of this post and be respectful.

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has suffered a “hard landing”, state television reported, as officials said search operations were under way but were being impeded by poor weather conditions.
Iranian state media said the incident occurred on Sunday near Jolfa in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.[...]
Raisi was returning from a visit to neighbouring Azerbaijan, where he had travelled to inaugurate a dam alongside the country’s President Ilham Aliyev.
State-linked media said three helicopters were in the Iranian president’s convoy, and the two others made it back safely. [...]
It remains unclear exactly what caused the “hard landing”, or whether any of the passengers in the helicopter have been hurt.[...]
Many of the military aircraft currently in service in Iran date back to before the country’s 1979 revolution.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Azerbaijan may be preparing for military aggression against his country as the term "Western Azerbaijan," has become increasingly popular in public discourse in Azerbaijan.
During a Nov. 18 speech at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Yerevan, Pashinyan claimed Azerbaijan media, schools, and universities had started calling Armenia this way, warning the rhetoric could signal Baku's desire to start an offensive military operation.
United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned a select group of lawmakers that Azerbaijan might be planning to invade Armenia in the coming weeks, Politico reported on Oct. 13.
Officials familiar with the discussion told Politico that Blinken spoke about the possibility of an invasion in a conference call on Oct. 3.
The call addressed officials' questions about the U.S. response to Azerbaijan's September offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh.
During the call, Blinken reportedly told lawmakers that the State Department will not renew an established agreement that permits the U.S. to offer Azerbaijan military aid. The agreement has been renewed every year since 2002 but lapsed in June.
In the same conversation, Blinken warned that Azerbaijan may invade southern Armenia.
Of particular concern is the southern region of Syunik, which Azerbaijan calls the Zangezur Corridor and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has repeatedly referred to as "Western Azerbaijan."
In mid-September, the Azerbaijani military launched a lightning offensive against the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, an unrecognized Armenian state within the territory of Azerbaijan. Local authorities eventually surrendered in a ceasefire mediated by Russia.
A formal decree was later signed, dissolving all official institutions of the breakaway state from Jan. 1, 2024. Following Azerbaijan's victory, around 100,000 people have left Nagorno-Karabakh for Armenia.
